About the Work

Urban Mind edited by Anthony Rudick is an interweaving of still photographs and video celebrating New York City. A soundtrack of jazz and hip-hop is inter-cut to bring the images to life in the urban landscape. "Urban Mind" is a journey through one of the most popular cities in the world. New York has so much to offer and so much to capture. During our semester in the spring of 2007, our class accumulated many different styles of photography and video, which was put together as if you spent a day walking through the streets of New York. The techniques and individual styles of each student in the class came together in one uniform piece near the end of the semester. As you go on our journey through this photo/video collection, the visual process of learning the different styles of capturing an object, space or even shadows conform to one full dimension of what different people see in everyday life throughout the city. I hope that you all can appreciate what each of our minds visualized as this project progressed over the time it took to create.”

I Am My Parents´ Daughter by Martha Sandoval tells the story of the life of the artist from birth to present through the use of narration, family archival stills, and video. The piece is visually strong and dense integrating strikingly beautiful black and white imagery. The rooftop motive references the artists´ vision as she looks into the future and remembers her past.

On My Way by Christina Conti is a whimsical self-portrait exploring the highlights, achievements, family lifestyle, and personal beliefs of the artist. Using animation, still images, location video, and personal archival video, the artist spins the visually engaging tale of her journey through life.

The Mouse at the Seashore by Shawn Nadolny is a lyrical adaptation of one of Arnold Lobel´s classic children´s fables. It incorporates illustrations created by artist Kristen Chiappone with live video footage to tell the journey of a mouse following his dream.

Flim Flam Man by Christina Conti is an experimental film shot in 16mm black and white, which follows a fanciful, comical performer. It employs stop-frame animation using jump cuts and strategic shot composition to convey a sense of wit, humor, and imagination.

I Like for You to be Still by Maria Larrea is an experimental piece adapted from a Spanish poem by Pablo Neruda and narrated by the Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz. Through the lyrical interweaving of images and the spoken word, the artist portrays emotions of love, beauty, and longing.

Me, Myself, and What I Once Felt by Nedelka Douglas is an experimental documentary chronicling a period of upheaval in the life of the artist when she lived through turmoil in Panama in the time of General Manuel Noriega. In 1989 the general was overthrown and captured in the United States invasion of Panama – the year Ms. Douglas immigrated to the United States with her family.

A Painted Sky by Maria Espinosa is an experimental short exploring the issues of air pollution in New Jersey caused by power plants and factories. Combining 16mm black and white film, digital video, narration, and music, the piece means to remind people how tenuous our existence can be when we ignore the destruction of our fragile environment.

Entangled Dusk by Louis Libitz is an experimental work exploring movement, spontaneity, and pattern through the interaction of a dense group of crows in a tree outside the artist´s window.

Subway Melodies by Michael Krivicka is a highly accomplished experimental documentary about the musicians of the New York City subway system and its relationship between mechanical and human sounds. It explores the subway system as a stage and as a complex instrument that never stops playing, and presents the Metrocard as more than just a ride on the subway but a ticket to a unique musical experience that can be witnessed nowhere else in the world. Not a word is spoken in Subway Melodies. The entire film takes place under ground, never leaving the subway world, and draws a new perspective on subway life as we know it.
