FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MONDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES SERIES OF FREE SCREENINGS OF FILMS AND VIDEOS BY NJCU STUDENTS AND ALUMNI TO KICK-OFF AT FIVE CORNERS LIBRARY ON NOVEMBER 26

“Monday Night at the Movies,” a free series of screenings of films and videos by New Jersey City University media arts students and alumni, will be hosted by Susan Stewart, branch manager of the Five Corners Branch of the Jersey City Free Public Library, beginning on Monday, November 26, in the Mildred H. Hunke Auditorium of the Library, 678 Newark Avenue in Jersey City, a few blocks from Journal Square. On-street parking is available.

The November program will feature four documentary videos curated by Jane Steuerwald, an NJCU professor of media arts for Urban Image, a media arts collective based at the University.

Documentaries to be screened include “Homeless, Not Helpless” and “The Edge of All You Know,” by Felix Rodriguez ’12; “The Hoboken Batman” by Marco Vidal ’12; and “AKA Cheese” by Makisha Rodriguez ’13 and Nandy Santos ’12, which won first place in the college category of the 38th annual New Jersey Young Film and Videomakers’ Festival Showcase.

“Homeless, Not Helpless” by Felix Rodriguez, draws on interviews with homeless individuals in Hudson County and community activists working on their behalf to provide a better understanding of the conditions under which the homeless population lives. “AKA Cheese” by Makisha Rodriguez and Nandy Santos, is a portrait of a Jersey City graffiti artist, Juan Vasquez. This documentary explores the four major pillars of the Hip-hop culture as seen through the eyes of Vasquez – a.k.a. “Cheese” as he focuses on the street art element, graffiti. “The Edge of All You Know” by Felix Rodriguez, is a portrait of visual artist, Cristina Rutkowski who lives and works in New Jersey. In this piece, she talks about eternal perspective, the risks of creating art and her relationship with the known and unknowable cosmos. “The Hoboken Batman” by Marco Vidal, is a portrait of Marlon Rodriguez, a Cuban immigrant that moved to America to be free and live his life by entertaining and helping others. Since 2006 his local celebrity status has increased and this documentary was made to help tell his story. Marlon's life is an offbeat portrait of the American dream.

All three films tell stories of exceptional people - some who struggle with homelessness, some who make art, and one who lives out his dreams in unusual ways.

“Monday Night at the Movies” screenings will also be held on January 28 and March 25. The January program will feature “Jersey City: 24 Hours in Public Places” an award-winning documentary by NJCU media arts majors that explores the many diverse cultural, historic, gritty, and eccentric places that make up the City. The March program will feature “Urban Image Showcase 2012.”
